In the Bundesarchiv, there are holdings of the division "Deutsches Reich" (German Reich), "DDR" (German Democratic Republic) and sources of the "Stiftung der Parteien und Massenorganisationen der DDR" (Foundation of Parties and Massorganisations of the GDR). The Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv holds all the sources collected previously in Koblenz and Berlin. The sources of the fromer "Berlin Document Center" are part of the holdings of the Bundesarchiv.

The Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz (GStA) holds the documents concerning the territory and history of the former Prussian State. In the reading room there is available an inventory of the holdings of the genealogical and heraldry society "Herold e.V."

If ancestors originated from Berlin, Brandenburg or territories which once belonged to the German Reich, the holdings of the Kirchliche Archivzentrum Berlin (Central Archive of the Church in Berlin) are of great interest.

The Landeskirchliche Archiv der Evangelischen Kirche in Berlin-Brandenburg (Archive of the Regional Protestant Church of Berlin-Brandenburg ELAB) preservs microfilms resp. church records of different parishes in Berlin and Brandenburg. The website gives an overview about the holdings.

In 2015, the central organization of the protestant churches in Germany (EKD) published a website with digitalized church records. Included are records from the Eastern part of the German "Reich" (prior to 1945). Access to this portal is not free of charge.
